Legendary American choreographer Twyla Tharp is celebrating her company's 60 year anniversary this year with a "Diamond Jubilee" programme on the national tour.
Because the tour does not come to Europe, I have to rely on U.S. theatres' playbills and U.S. media.
The coast-to-coast tour kicked off in late January in Northrop, Minnesota. In this tour programme, Twyla Tharp Dance, which Tharp set up in 1965, performs two pieces: Diabelli, which she created in 1998 to Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations, and a new work, SLACKTIDE, set to Philip Glass’s Aguas da Amazonia, arranged and performed live by Third Coast Percussion.
These reviews on The Minnesota Star Tribune and Fjord Review are informative.
I wish I had been in Northrop. Personally, I have watched In the Upper Room, her work in 1986 also set to Phillip Glass's score, for a few times with a few different ballet companies and The Illustrated 'Farewell' with The Royal Ballet in 2017. I hope to get more opportunities to see more of Twyla Tharp's works in the near future. She is now 83 years old and still seems to be full of energy.
