Royal Ballet Principals updates

Ikuko

Here are some of the recent news with Royal Ballet Principals.

Vadim Muntagirov came back on the Covent Garden stage on 7th March 2025 as Romeo of Romeo and Juliet with Fumi Kaneko as his Juliet. He had been absent from the homeground stage this season due to an injury sustained in late-August or early-September last year although he already performed overseas in January.

Calvin Richardson and Akane Takada will guest dance the title roles of Kenneth MacMillian's Romeo and Juliet with the Queensland Ballet in Australia on 26th and 28th March. Richardson is from Australia and Takada is from Japan.

Iana Salenko came back as a guest artist for the first time in many years. She replaced Sarah Lamb, who was injured, as Juliet on 15th March. Her Romeo was, of course, Steven McRae. Salenko was a regular guest artist in 2013 and she partnered with McRae. Personally, I watched Don Quixote with Salenko and McRae. I have to say she was a sexy Kitri. Get well soon, Sarah.

Steven McRae: Dancing Back to the Light, a TV documentary featuring Steven McRae's battle to return to the stage, is available on BBC iPlayer, unfortunately, only for UK audiences. For Steven fans outside the UK, here is the trailer. As a background information, his Achilles snapped on stage while he was performing Manon in the packed Royal Opera House in 2019.
