Dancers, who were fired by the Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s (DBDT) in summer, got together and organised their first dance performance in benefit shows on 18-19 December 2024, according to media reports.
The performance, titled Emergence, sold out for both days, the D Magazine said.
On the contrary, some media including the Dance Magazine said the future of DBDT was unclear.
In August 2024, DBDT’s management fired all ten dancers of its main company in an act which dancers claimed was a union busting.
The dancers initially wanted to be reinstated. However, ealier in December, DBDT agreed to pay a settlement of about $560,000 to the dancers and others whose employments were rescinded by the company.
Nevertheless, the Dallas City Council a few days later decided to cut off the funding to DBDT for the next year.
