Carolyn Brown, a founding member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, passed away.
According to the Dance Magazine, Brown passed away on 7th January 2025. She was 97 years old.
“Carolyn Brown first encountered Merce Cunningham in a master class he taught in April 1951. “I’d never seen anyone move like Merce: he was a strange, disturbing mixture of Greek god, panther, and madman.” Carolyn soon began training and rehearsing with Merce and in 1953 she became one of the founding members of his first company. She continued to dance for and with Merce until 1972, originating roles in forty dances, including such iconic works as Suite for Five, Antic Meet, Summerspace, Night Wandering, Crises, Aeon, Winterbranch, Scramble, RainForest, and Walkaround Time.”
